Join the Stimson Center for a panel discussion on the underlying and far-reaching consequences the Ukraine crisis presents for the UN, and what that might portend for global norms and order.  Taking place on the 26th of April 9:30 – 10:45 AM EST (New York), the session will seek to address the role of the UN as a focal point in rallying international public opinion and effective humanitarian response. In wake of the Ukraine conflict, public perceptions of the UN’s legitimacy and authority have wavered and caused the global community to challenge fundamental assumptions about the international order. Accordingly, this session seeks to answer questions surrounding what specific steps the UN Secretary General, the Security Council, and General Assembly can take to address this crisis, and the role of existing war crimes tribunals, ICC and ICJ in upholding international law.

Featured Speakers

  • Richard Gowan, UN Director, International Crisis Group
  • Ambassador Michal Mlyná, Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations
  • Ambassador (ret.) Keith M. Harper, Former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council
  • Dr. Carrie McDougall, Senior Lecturer, University of Melbourne Law School
