“… a Summit of the Future to forge a new global consensus on what our future should look like, and what we can
do today to secure it.”

– Our Common Agenda

📌 ICYMI: SDG Action Weekend event “From the SDG Summit to the Summit of the Future: Building the UN We Need

The points of consensus among Member States and civil society alike are numerous, though often framed in the negative: the international order is in need of improvement; climate change is a globally shared challenge; our peace and security approaches are insufficient; and the Sustainable Development Goals require tremendous investment in order to be met. Most worryingly, promises made are not being fulfilled. Fortunately, Member States have also agreed to hold a Summit of the Future in 2024—a rare opportunity to leave a consequential legacy, particularly around our global governance architecture.

With one year to go, it is worth considering where we are in terms of the processes for the Summit of the Future and its associated Pact for the Future. The five tracks of the Pact have been agreed upon, the United Nations has worked effectively to expand our collective knowledge-base through policy briefs and other inputs, and Civil Society is preparing its engagement. We also have a growing number of former world leaders calling for meaningful outcomes and long-term thinking. In other words, despite the daunting political challenges before us, we have both an agreed need, and an agreed opportunity.

Join us for a roundtable discussion, the eleventh in this series, on United Nations Day, 24 October, to restart the“Road to the Summit” series—a series dedicated to exploring the various recommendations and processes outlined in Secretary-General António Guterres’ Our Common Agenda. This off-the-record conversation will, as always, feature key Member State, United Nations, and Civil Society representatives sharing vision, aspirations, and opportunities for the upcoming Summit. We will be asking participants to react to some of the key asks in the open letter, to surface questions of their own, and to articulate the vision they have for success in the coming year. The hope is that this conversation will develop joint understanding around a compelling vision for the future, galvanize meaningful action, encourage partnerships, and demonstrate that we are all moving forward in a shared endeavor, each with our distinct roles and responsibilities. As in previous gatherings, a two-page unattributed summary will be released, as a substantive contribution to the evolving dialogue.

Guiding Questions

  • Building on the outcomes of the UNGA 78 high-level week, what are some of the hopes and aspirations we can envision being achieved one year from now?
  • In what ways can resolute action on agreed commitments contribute to building trustworthiness, political momentum, and stakeholder commitment?
  • What improved partnerships can be developed among Member States and stakeholders to advance these goals?
