Joris Larik is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University in the Netherlands and Senior Advisor and Nonresident Fellow for the Global Governance, Justice & Security Program at Stimson.
Larik’s expertise is in the areas of comparative, EU and international law, regional organizations in world politics, transatlantic relations, and global governance reform. His work has been acknowledged with several awards, including NATO’s Manfred Wörner Essay Award (2008), the Outstanding Paper Award from the Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University (2012), and the Mauro Cappelletti Prize for the Best Doctoral Thesis in Comparative Law (2014) from the European University Institute.
Larik is the co-editor, with Richard Ponzio and William Durch, of Just Security in an Undergoverned World (Oxford University Press 2018), author of Foreign Policy Objectives in European Constitutional Law (Oxford University Press 2016), and co-author of ASEAN’s External Agreements: Law, Practice and the Quest for Collective Action (Cambridge University Press 2015). Moreover, he has published in both law and international relations journals, including Common Market Law Review, European Constitutional Law Review, European Foreign Affairs Review, European Law Review, Global Policy, International & Comparative Law Quarterly, Legal Issues of Economic Integration, Netherlands International Law Review, Survival, University of Pennsylvania Journal of International Law, and Yearbook of European Law.
From August 2017 to February 2018, Larik was a Fulbright-Schuman Fellow at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington D.C. Previously, Larik has completed several policy-oriented research projects for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the European Commission. In 2014/15, he served on the core project team for the Report of the Commission on Global Security, Justice & Governance co-chaired by former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Nigerian Foreign Minister Ibrahim Gambari.
