“Humanity’s welfare – and indeed, humanity’s very future – depend on solidarity and working together as a global family to achieve common goals.” – Our Common Agenda

Building upon the successful series of multi-stakeholder dialogues launched back in May of 2022, the Our Common Agenda Discussion Series will once again convene to host the fifth meeting of the series, further deepening the conversation on Secretary-General António Guterres’ report Our Common Agenda. This series provides an opportunity for Member States, the United Nations, and Civil Society to collaborate on ways to forge tangible, actionable steps forward in seeking to implement proposals outlined in the OCA. At the end of each off-the-record discussion, a two-page unattributed summary will be created as a substantive contribution to the process. We aim to create a final compilation report in advance of the proposed 2024 Summit of the Future.

OCA Series Meeting 5: Tipping the Scales: Proposals for UN Reform in a Time of Need

The Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda report identifies the current period as “our biggest shared test since the Second World War in which“humanity’s welfare—and indeed, humanity’s very future—depend on solidarity and working together as a global family to achieve common goals.”The report provides a sophisticated analysis of many problems to be overcome, as well as over 90 recommendations, at varying levels of scope and specificity. Yet valuable as it is, the challenges—and possibilities—of the present moment call for continued experimentation and innovation, in a spirit of genuine exploration. This off-the-record dialogue, offered both online and in-person at the Bahá’í International Community’s office in New York, will feature a number of experienced speakers proposing – in three-to-four minutes- their best ideas for innovations that could improve the effectiveness of the United Nations. No idea is too small, but a practical road to implementation is key. After these presentations, participants, including Member State and UN delegates will be free to comment and reflect upon what they will have heard. The aim of this gathering will be a participatory and out-of-the box space to explore the new ideas for global governance in a time of need. As in previous gatherings, a two-page unattributed summary will be released, as a substantive contribution to the evolving dialogue.

Agenda

This discussion series will be offered in a hybrid format, online and in-person at the Bahá’í International Community’s offices in New York. The 90 minute session will bring together key lead-off contributors to focus on specific proposals from the report, who will extrapolate on ideas discussed in prior OCA Dialogue sessions, while also advancing the conversation by focusing on additional proposals for UN Reform, including a Declaration on Future Generations, a New Agenda for Peace, and a Global Digital Compact. Following the open discussion, reflections will be provided H.E. Christopher Lu, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations along with Mr. Fernando Andres Marani, Head of the Office of the President of the General Assembly.
