The urgency and scale of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss mean that environmental concerns must be central to the Summit of the Future process and outcomes. Scientists have demonstrated that six of nine Planetary Boundaries have already been overstepped due to human activity, and we are running very grave risks of crossing irreversible Earth system tipping points. We are already within a planetary emergency. The current draft of the Pact for the Future and associated documents can better demonstrate an overarching framework ro recognise and address the gravity of the triple planetary crisis, as well as the momentous opportunities that the current challenges present.

At this roundtable, climate and environmental governance reform perspectives and proposals will be shared from the Climate Governance Commission report Governing our Planetary Emergency and the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, noting their potential to be integrated into the Summit of the Future. Further, the work of the Earth Governance ImPACT Coalition established at the Nairobi May 2024 UN Civil Society Conference will be highlighted as an example of a “smart coalition” that Permanent Representatives should be aware of when considering avenues for member state – civil society collaboration to advance environmental and climate governance proposals.

Guiding questions:

  1. What is the latest Earth science demonstrating about the urgency of the triple planetary crisis?
  2. What kinds of global governance reforms can align international responses with the best available science?
  3. What actions should we be taking in the short and medium term, especially for the Summit of the Future?
