CIPÓ is one of the contributors to the Preparatory Seminar for COP28, which takes place next Wednesday (18/10), at 10am (Brasília time), in Plenary 2 of Annex II of the Chamber of Deputies. In addition to parliamentarians, experts on the topic and various representatives from the government and civil society will be present.

This is a joint proposal from the Environment and Sustainable Development and Amazon and Indigenous and Traditional Peoples Commissions. The request was presented by deputies Célia Xakriabá (Psol-MG) and Nilto Tatto (PT-SP).

The objective of the seminar, as the name suggests, is to prepare parliamentarians for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the United Nations Climate Framework Convention, to be held between November 30 and December 12, 2023 in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The executive director of CIPÓ, Maiara Folly, will be on the first panel, alongside names from the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (Apib), the Mapinguari Institute, the Climate Observatory and the Ministries of Environment and Climate Change (MMA ), Foreign Relations (MRE) and Indigenous Peoples (MPI). On the agenda: NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) under the Paris Agreement.

COP 28 will discuss the main themes that permeate climate change. The expectation is that the meeting will result in concrete actions and advances in negotiations between the countries.

Among the topics to be covered are: the Global Stocktake, the first global assessment of how countries are progressing in implementing their mitigation goals through the Paris Agreement, and the establishment of the loss and damage fund, whose governance has not yet been established and divides developing countries and developed countries.

The COP will also debate financing for climate action in poor countries, progress in discussions on fair energy transition and the need to put an end to the burning of fossil fuels.
